Press Statement No. 19-2021_SUHAKAM Stands in Solidarity with Palestinians

KUALA LUMPUR (16 MAY 2021) – The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) condemns in the strongest terms, the forced evictions of Palestinians, escalating violence against civilians and recent air-strikes between Palestine and Israel. The flare-up of violence which began a week ago in the midst of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, has reportedly killed 148 people in Gaza, including 41 children, to date. Israel continues to commit such atrocities in Palestine with impunity, and SUHAKAM regrets that, as of today, the United Nations (UN) Security Council has not adequately addressed the matter.

The Charter of the United Nations clearly states that the threat or use of force against other States is unlawful, and according to Article 2(4) “All Members shall refrain, in their international relations, from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations”.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Michelle Bachelet has called for strict respect for international law and appealed to all sides to take steps to de-escalate the increasingly alarming situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. These atrocities are against human rights principles and SUHAKAM is deeply concerned about the critical humanitarian and deteriorating human rights situation in Palestine. SUHAKAM hopes that humanitarian assistance would be prioritised, as in all emergency situations, and definitive steps would be taken to protect and preserve the lives and dignity of individuals, including of women and children.

With respect to preserving media freedoms, violent attacks against media houses must cease immediately. SUHAKAM echoes the statement by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to immediately call for the cessation of all forms of violence committed by Israel and effort must be taken to save the lives of Palestinians. SUHAKAM joins all Malaysians in supporting the pledge and stands in solidarity with Palestinians.

KUALA LUMPUR (16 MEI 2021) – Suruhanjaya Hak Asasi Manusia Malaysia (SUHAKAM) dengan tegas mengutuk pengusiran paksa rakyat Palestin, peningkatan keganasan terhadap orang awam dan serangan udara antara Palestin dan Israel yang berlaku baru-baru ini. Keganasan yang bermula sejak seminggu lalu pada bulan Ramadhan, sehingga kini telah mengorbankan 148 orang di Gaza, termasuk 41 orang kanak-kanak. Israel berterusan melakukan kekejaman sedemikian di Palestin dan SUHAKAM kesal dengan Majlis Keselamatan Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) yang sehingga kini masih gagal menangani krisis tersebut dengan sewajarnya.

Piagam PBB dengan jelas menyatakan bahawa ancaman atau penggunaan kekerasan terhadap Negara-negara lain adalah menyalahi undang-undang dan termaktub dalam Perkara 2(4) bahawa “Seluruh anggota, dalam hubungan antarabangsanya, harus mengelakkan daripada tindakan mengancam atau menggunakan kekerasan terhadap integriti wilayah atau kemerdekaan politik suatu negara lain, atau dengan apa cara sekali pun yang bertentangan dengan Matlamat PBB”.

Pesuruhjaya Tinggi Hak Asasi Manusia PBB, Michelle Bachelet menggesa semua pihak untuk menghormati undang-undang antarabangsa dan semua pihak harus mengambil langkah-langkah bagi meredakan keadaan yang semakin membimbangkan di Israel dan Wilayah Palestin. Kekejaman ini bertentangan dengan prinsip hak asasi manusia dan SUHAKAM bimbang dengan situasi kemanusiaan yang kritikal dan semakin parah di Palestin. SUHAKAM berharap agar keutamaan dapat diberikan kepada bantuan kemanusiaan dengan mengambil kira situasi semasa darurat dan langkah-langkah yang lebih berkesan dapat diambil bagi melindungi dan memelihara nyawa serta maruah setiap individu, termasuk wanita dan anak-anak.

Bagi melindungi kebebasan media, serangan ganas terhadap media harus segera dihentikan. SUHAKAM menyokong kenyataan Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin agar komuniti antarabangsa, khususnya Majlis Keselamatan PBB segera menamatkan segala bentuk keganasan yang dilakukan oleh Israel dan usaha harus dilakukan untuk menyelamatkan nyawa rakyat Palestin. SUHAKAM dengan ini menyertai seluruh rakyat Malaysia dalam menyokong ikrar dan bersolidariti dengan rakyat Palestin.
