PRESS STATEMENT

KUALA LUMPUR (15 JUNE 2023) –The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) extend its appreciation to the Government for tabling and debating the 2020 SUHAKAM Annual Report during the 2nd meeting of the 2nd session of fifteenth Parliament in 2023. This momentous occasion marks the second time that SUHAKAM’s Annual Report has been deliberated in the House since its establishment in 1999.

It is hoped that this valuable debate of the Annual Report will continue in the years to come.

Over the course of three days, Members of Parliament raised a wide array of crucial human rights issues. These discussions included citizenship, education, preventive laws, prison reform, human trafficking, refugees, migrant workers in the agricultural sector, rights of senior citizens, alternatives to detention for children, and the rights of indigenous peoples in Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia.

SUHAKAM acknowledges the recommendations made by Members of Parliament to promote human rights. These recommendations encompassed SUHAKAM’s active participation in two Parliamentary Select Committees namely PSC on Women, Children and Social Development and PSC on Human Rights, Elections and Institutional Reform, potential amendments to the SUHAKAM Act, the importance of international human rights treaties, the compatibility of human rights within the Islamic community, and the expeditious resolution of complaints.

The collaborative efforts between the Parliament and SUHAKAM, as reflected in the inclusion of the debate session, as well as the significant number of Members of Parliament who dedicated their time and energy to discuss the human rights issues outlined in the Report, are a testament of the paramount importance placed on human rights and the commitment of lawmakers to address any gaps or obstacles identified within it.

SUHAKAM remains resolute in its commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to further strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights in the country.
