Roundtable Discussion on the Protection of Workers in the Gig Economy
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) will be organising a Roundtable Discussion on the Protection of Workers in the Gig Economy on 1 September 2021. The details of the event are as below:
Date : 1 September 2021, Wednesday
Time : 9.00 am – 1.00 pm
Venue : Online via Zoom
The gig economy presents significant challenges in upholding labour rights. The lack of a clear definition of gig workers in Malaysia and collectively agreed terms of employment hinders the ability of gig workers to exercise work related rights, such as stability of employment, social security; paid holiday and sick leave; minimum wage; and the right to organise a union and collectively bargain.
All companies wherever they operate have a responsibility to respect human rights and address their human rights impacts in accordance with the UN Guiding Principles. The proper classification of workers which determines what rights and benefits they are legally entitled to—lies at the heart of the state duty to protect and business’ responsibility to respect human rights.
The objective of the discussion is to:
· Identify the employment status and classification of gig workers
· Understand the challenges and concerns faced by gig workers and gig economy companies
· Evaluate how gig labour platforms and the companies that operate them provide fair working conditions and decent work
· Assess how rights at work can be extended to those working in the gig economy; and
· Examine current social protection policies for gig workers.
In this regard, SUHAKAM is pleased to invite YBhg. Sri/Datuk/Dato’/Datin/Prof/Dr/Sir/Madam/Mr/Ms, or a representative to participate in the Roundtable Discussion on the Protection of Workers in the Gig Economy. Please find attached herewith the concept note and agenda for your reference.
