PROF. MADYA DR. NIK SALIDA SUHAILA BINTI NIK SALEH
Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila Nik Saleh is currently a Commissioner, Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (2016-present); a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Syariah and Law, Islamic Science University of Malaysia (2003-present), a Fellow of the Tunku Hajjah Azizah Centre for Women Studies, Islamic University of Malaysia (2016-present), a Fellow of Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (2013-present) and also the Hukum Syarak Consultative Committee, Office of Wilayah Persekutuan’s Mufti (2014-present).
Her academic qualification include Doctor of Philosophy in Law (University of Keele, UK) 2013; Masters of Comparative Laws (International Islamic University Malaysia) 2001; LL.B (Hons.) (International Islamic University Malaysia) 2000; Certified Takaful Professional (London) 2012; Certified Islamic Finance Expert (London) 2012; Maahad Muhammadi Lilbanat (Kota Bharu, Kelantan) and Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Kamil (1) (Pasir Puteh, Kelantan).
Prior to her present positions, Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila held many important positions which include Director, Permata Insan College, Islamic Science University of Malaysia (2015-2017); Deputy Director, Permata Insan College, Islamic Science University of Malaysia (2013-2015); Head of Cluster and Fellow Researcher, Institute of World Fatwa Research and Management (2013-2014); Coordinator of Publication, Institute of World Fatwa Research and Management (2012-2014); Deputy Dean, Faculty of Syariah and Law, Islamic Science University of Malaysia (Mac 2008-September 2008); Coordinator, Tamhidi Syariah and Undang-Undang, Islamic Science University of Malaysia (2005-2007) and Law Lecturer, International Islamic University Malaysia Matriculation Centre (2001-2003).
Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila has made many contributions with institutional, national and international impact since the 2000s, in the area of legal education while serving in the Law Department, International Islamic University Malaysia Matriculation Centre and the Faculty of Syariah and Law, Islamic Science University of Malaysia, women’s rights and society issues, as well as gender equality and minority groups’ advocacy programmes.
As a lecturer, she taught various subjects of civil and Shariah laws including law of torts, Islamic legal system, Islamic family law, administration of Islamic law, Malaysian legal system, law of contract and international human rights law. At present, Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila is specialising in family related laws and women’s rights. She supervises research students in these related fields.

She has written and edited a few books on Shariah and laws issues, among others, Diskusi Syariah dan Undang-Undang (2005), Prinsip Dan Pengurusan Fatwa di Negara-Negara Asean (2006), Issues In Laws And Syariah (2007), The Development of Economics and Muamalat Practices (2007), Sains Islam Merentasi Zaman (2007), Syariah Dan Undang-Undang: Isu Dan Amalan (2007), Biografi Mufti-Mufti Seluruh Malaysia (2008), Sains Islam Dan Pembinaan Modal Insan (2008), Contemporary Issues and General Studies (2008), Ilmu dan Islam (2008), Salah Faham Tentang Islam…Tapi Anda Malu Bertanya (2008), Language And Life (2008), Transformasi Pemikiran Sarwajagat (2014) and Fiqh Dental (2015) . She has been awarded with a number of research grants to facilitate her research activities. She has her own newspaper column in Berita Harian from 2008 until 2014. She occasionally writes in other local newpaper and magazines since 2004.
Her special ability to blend her professional and academic career in legal, gifted and talented education and medias with her passion for children and women’s development as a former Director and Deputy Director of Permata Insan College, is what makes her contribution unique and impactful for the advancement of Islam, education, children and community at large.
She is also sought after as adviser, consultant and speaker by organisations such as Yayasan Pelajaran MARA, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), Yayasan Nurul Yaqeen, Utusan Karya Sdn. Bhd, AEON Co. Ltd. as well as other universities. She appears regularly as special guest speaker for the live broadcast at Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), TV3, TV9, TVAl-Hijrah, Astro, Institute of Islamic Understanding (IKIM) radio programme. She also has her own talk show, Al-Maraaya in TVAl-Hijrah.
Dr. Nik Salida Suhaila has been invited as a speaker in various conferences, such as in Oxford University, Manchester University, Birmingham University, Keele University in United Kingdom and Zayed University, UAE. As part of her global recognition, she was invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia for a Special Visit Program in July 2017. Her multifaceted interest is reflected in her appointment into high level commission. She was appointed by His Majesty the King to serve in Human Rights Commission of Malaysia.

Some may argue that respect for human rights could hinder effective law enforcement. In reality, the enforcement officials are the frontliners in defending the human rights. They are the guardians of the law, including human rights law. The community depends on the enforcement official to protect their rights through effective enforcement of the country’s laws.
