PRESENT COMMISSIONER

DATUK GODFREY GREGORY JOITOL

Datuk Godfrey Gregory Joitol joined Sabah Civil Service in 1978 and retired as Deputy State Secretary (Development) in 2011.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English from the University of Malaya and a Master of Science (Administrative Science and Development Problems) from the University of York, United Kingdom.

During his 33 years in the Sabah Civil Service, Datuk Godfrey held senior positions in various capacities in the Chief Minister’s Department and as Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Community Development and Consumer Affairs and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.

In performing his duties at these agencies, Datuk Godfrey Gregory Joitol worked on the human rights of children, persons with disabilities, older persons and consumers.

He is currently an independent Director of a Sabah State Government-owned company, Saham Sabah Berhad (SSB) and a member of the Audit & Compliance Committee and the Establishment & Administration Committee.

He also sits on the Board of Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park Sdn. Bhd and Borneo Development Corporation (Sabah) Sdn. Bhd.

Datuk Godfrey Gregory Joitol was appointed as a Commissioner of SUHAKAM in June 2016 for the term 2016-2019 and the term has been extended to 2022.

Advocacy has been an essential part of SUHAKAM’s work and our goal is to move beyond advocacy and to make real changes in the system. We believe that human rights situation in Malaysia will continue to improve in the future given the more open, free and transformative democracy in the country
